2008 Burn --- No Palenque Norte this year

I'm sorry to have to let you know that after five consecutive years of producing Palenque Norte lectures and Playalogues at Burning Man, I'm not going to be able to make it this year. It's not that I don't want to be there, but gas prices and a few other things have made it impossible this time . . . hopefully Palenque Norte will be back on the playa in 2009!

. . . I hope you all have a great burn!!!!

Peace, love, & light,

World Psychedelic Forum, 21st-23rd March 2008, Basel

And a Good Day to You,
I am interested as to whether any of You will be attending the World Psychedelic Forum in Basel in the coming months, and if so, whether You know of any inexpensive accommodation options, so long as there is enough warmth and space to sleep; perhaps a hostel that is within a close enough proximity to the Event? And I am also wondering, if there is anyone planning the visit from the UK, whether You know of the best method of transport to the Event, unfortunately I will be too restricted at the time to walk or hitch there, well unless anyone was known that might be travelling there in their own vehicle who had a spare space.

If you might be able to help out with the above questions, your ideas would be much appreciated,

Many thanks

Daniel Pinchbeck just did a spot on Whitley Strieber's "Dreamland" podcast. They get into a little bit of tussle over Strieber's attitude. It is both hilarious and sad. Thought you might like to know. If you're intersted, you can check it out at www.unknowncountry.com or ITunes (I know, I know).

It may be a little dusty this year

Here is a part of an email I received today:
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =
weather report...
Sent: Sunday, August 19, 2007 9:32 PM

Greetings from the playa where I am happy and well and holed up in my
car. I dont want this to deter anyone from coming, as it's still a
blast - but..batten down the hatches kids, cause the wind is the worst
I've seen in the 12 years I have been coming here.

For those of you around when the big wind hit last year and took our
camp down, that is the way it has been the bulk of the time - really that
windy, mostly non stop. The airstream is shaking and rocking and my
tent is tied to every rack and bumper and hitch the truck & airstream have,
and I'm still unsure if it's going to hold up (one pole already snapped).

The white out's are lasting a long time, some well over 5 hours. I
hear it has been like this for weeks, dont know if it will continue
through the event. but the green man is about nature, so be prepared for the
force of nature to remind us how small we are! The good news is that
it's warm thus far, even in the middle of the night.
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

So be sure you've got your goggles and a stack of extra breathing masks,
and you may want to bring an extra air filter for your vehicle to use on the
way home.

And in case you might think a little dust storm on the playa can't be a
little intimidating, you might want to take a look at Bruce Damer's account
of the Condition Alpha that took place just after the 2002 event ended. It's
at: http://www.damer.com/pictures/events/burningman2002/blowout/alphaguide.html

Well, I've got a great line-up of speakers again this year . . . however, there is one little problem. We're still looking for a large space in which to hold them. If anyone is running a theme camp, has a large covered space, and wants to host the 2007 Palenque Norte lectures on Wed, Thur, and Fri from 3 to 6 pm please let me know.

Burning Man Screen Print Gift for the playa

Hi All

My name is Jeff Wood. I'm a visual artist that does art and posters for the music industry.

Since I started attending Burning Man last year I have started producing a screen print to give away on the playa. Last year I gave away 1000 prints. This year's edition is slightly smaller, somewhere around 900, I'm still sorting and signing.

It is a 7 color screen print based on a visionary experience I had at last year's burn. It is also reflects this year's theme. I also have an Burning Man edition of the Peace Enlightens print that I will be giving away.

A pic of the print is available on my tribe page people.tribe.net/be1cda61-...bd7bbce01d

I will be giving my prints away at B.R.A.T. (Black Rock Arts Tribe) Camp at 3:00 and Grasslands. I will also be at Playalogues gifting.

See you on the Playa!

~Jeff

Hey folks, I have never been to Burning Man but hope to make it soon, I think ;) Looks freakish to me. I say that to mean it looks a little scary and techno-postmodern or something like that. But from what I have read there does appear to be uncondional love there and if that's really true, maybe I can overcome my own hangups. I do like the idea of the freedom to recreate yourself for a week and let it rip. I just joined this site and hope to find a place to fit in. Fitting is has never been one of my strong points ;-) I have not, up unitl recently, spent a lot of time on line but I hope to spend more time logged and learn more about this site. Falling asleep now. Peace and love to all. Thanks for the pocasts Lorenzo! The Trialogues are mind bending!

Thanks for the Dale Pendell, one of my favorites yet, and I think I've heard them all...
The insights into the idea that legislation is ultimately a failure of society to work out it's problems is beautiful.
Thanks Dale and Lorenzo!

Yeah I'm the newbie in the tribe, but no stranger to entheogens. I dropped for the first time in '71. In the years that followed many trips were taken. I've never talked to God though. HUH - HUH. Can't say I ever learned much in the way of practical info from all those trips. I feel the best applications for entheogens are for treating depression (small doses) and Programming/Meta programming. At a young age I learned what Leary and the CIA discovered: that people become highly suggestable when they're tripping.(Manson also knew this). It's apparant how entheogens in the hands of control freaks could be a bad thing. Comments?

Erik Davis' 2006 Palenque Norte lecture at Burning Man now online

Here is what I had to say on my podcast page about this talk:

In his inspiring 2006 Palenque Norte lecture at Burning Man, Erik Davis takes a peek at what the future may have in store for us. And contrary to so much of the doom and gloom we hear all around us these days, Erik's message is that there is much hope for humanity in the future. This talk is certainly thought-provoking and is not to be missed.

You can find this podcast (MP3 file) at: http://www.matrixmasters.com/podcasts/index.html#049

. . . and thanks again to all of you who stopped by to listen to one or more of our lectures this year. Your presence was greatly appreciated by the speakers, the Entheon Villagers, and myself.

Exo-Psychology Revisited

I have updated the star larvae site with an exposition of Dr. Leary's Exo-Psychology that connects it to neoteny, cetacea, and evolutionary teleology. Czech it out at http://www.starlarvae.org/Star_Larvae_Addendum_Exo-Psychology_Revisited.html

This aspect of Dr. Leary's work gets overlooked (as in the new Leary bio by Greenfield) but deserves a re-assessment in the light of developments since Leary's passing.

If any of you has some recording equipment you are bringing to the burn and want to help us record the Palenque Norte lectures we would really appreciate the help. As of right now, our only plan for capturing the talks this year is to put a cassette recorder in front of a speaker and do it the old way. So if you have an MP3 recorder that can take a direct feed from our sound board and want to be a real hero, please let us know.

April 21-23rd, 2006

Lectures by:
The Invisible Landscape: Mind, Hallucinogens, and the I Ching)

Dr. Dennis McKenna will be hosting a lecture
about his research into Ayahuasca. Dennis
McKenna is the brother of Terence McKenna - the
two traveled together to the Amazon to learn about
the healing properties of Ayahuasca. Dr. Dennis
McKenna is heavily involved in the research that
has helped to support both Terence’s work and his own.

Michael Crowley
(author; Secret Drugs of Buddhism, When the Gods
Drank Urine: the Riddle of Soma)

Michael Crowley will be speaking on the ancient
Hindu scripture called the Rig Veda and its frequent
mention of the drug plant "soma" though the precise
identity of this plant has remained a mystery for
millennia. Michael Crowley also uncovers sacramental
use of several other drug plants in Vajrayana Buddhism.
These drugs include Psilocybe cubensis, Argyreia
nervosa, Cannabis indica, Datura stramonium, and an

Hello,

I’m letting all of the tribes know about a regional event coming up soon – Rebirth. Burning Man, but rather than radical desert survival – radical tropical rain forest survival. Details of the event can be found here:

http://www.kapilina.org/bigisland/rebirth2006.html

Hawaii… Fire spinning capital of the world… Big Island… Hot tub ponds heated by thermal vents… Black Sand Beaches… LAVA… REAL LAVA! And a Burning Man regional event.

I’ve tried to figure out how to reduce costs as much as possible for everyone coming over from the mainland (if you can think of anyother suggestions please post):

Rideshare thread from the airport to puna here:
Again if you know cheaper means please repost. See you all there!

I've been getting some queries about whether there is going to be a PN theme camp at BM this year. Well, no, we won't be sponsoring our own camp . . . BECAUSE, we've joined forces with MAPS to again produce the MAPS/Palenque Norte lectures.

So the PN lectures will definitely be held this year, but they'll be held at the MAPS theme camp. Be next month I should be able to post a tenative schedule for the 2006 talks. This much I can tell you already, the line-up of speakers is going to be World Classs.

2005 Lectures now online in MP3 format

The good news is that I just posted all of the 2005 MAPS/Palenque Norte lectures that I received after the burn. The bad news is that there were only two of them :-( . . . . But good news again, the two we did capture were the ones given by Daniel Pinchbeck and Erik Davis. By coincidence, Daniel and Erik were two of the original speakers when be began the Burning Man lectures . . . AND the person who made the recordings was Bruce Damer, another of our original speakers. . . . Interestingly (but normal on the playa) Bruce's recording of his own talk that day didn't materialize.

That was a long way of saying that Daniel's and Erik's 2005 Burning Man lectures are now online. I've posted them in podcast (MP3) format at www.matrixmasters.com/podcasts/

So far, it looks like the only audio of the 2005 talks that was captured were the Friday talks, which Bruch Damer recorded and will be letting us post on the Palenque Norte site.

But we haven't been able to locate any other recordings. If you made recordings, or know someone who did, and wouldn't mind sharing them, I'd appreciate a copy to post on the site.
Thursday Afternoon 4:20 Kite Fly

The Black Rock City Department of Tethered Aviation is pleased to announce the 8th Annual Thursday Afternoon 4:20 Kite Fly.

The event will start at Thursday afternoon at 4:20, on the Playa in front of the DOTA Camp at Esplanade & 7:00, and radiate out to fill the Playa sky.
Join us and help make the 4:20 Kite Fly the largest kiting event in the Northern America.

Our goal is to put 10,000 kites into the sky over the Playa. Hopefully, the wind gods will cooperate this year.
DOTA needs your help to accomplish this 10,000 kite goal. We are asking all citizens of Black Rock City to bring two kites to the Playa this year.
One to fly and one for someone else to fly.

The Red Line is coming. Don't forget to look skyward as you travel the Playa.

One of the original members of our first Palenque Norte camp has completed the transition to her next adventure. Last Wednesday, our dear friend Kayo Hatta accidentally drowned. Some of you will remember Kayo and Doug from our 2003 camp at Burning Man. I've posted a couple pictures of them on our 2003 photo page at

http://www.matrixmasters.com/pn/pnPhotos.html

So farewell, lovely Kayo, our howling lotus. May your great adventure continue, and we hope you will still grace us with your wonderful spirit in the years that lie ahead for the rest of the ground crew here on planet Earth.

Palenque ruins tour by Christian Raetsch podcast

I know that many of you have been to the Mayan ruins at Palenque, Mexico. And some of you were fortunate enough to have heard Christian Raetsch give one of his famous tours of the ruins. Thanks to Matt Pallamary, who made a tape recording of Christian's 2001 talk, it is now available in MP3 format as the 10th podcast of the Psychedelic Salon. . . . Just go to www.PalenqueNorte.org and click the podcast button. . . . This should bring back a few memories :-).

Lorenzo has been sharing an idea with me of the possibilities of touring a PN conference from place to place as a means especially of bridging between youth and older generations of psychonauts. Any input or interest in helping manifest this worthy vision?

I’ve posted a podcast of Zena, Allyson, and Alex Grey’s talk at Burning Man in 2003. It’s titled “Art, Love, Family, and Psychedelics”, and you can find it on our Palenque Norte site ( www.PalenqueNorte.org ). BTW, you don’t need an iPod to listen, as podcasts are just fancy MP3 files :-).

PodCasting the Palenque Norte talks

I've now converted the first two of our Palenque Norte talks at Burning Man into PodCast format for those of you who are interested.

http://www.matrixmasters.com/podcasts/

And if, like me :-(, you don't have an iPod, no problem. iPodder has free software for PCs, Macs, and Linux so you can play the programs on your computer.

Tomorrow I'll be posting Rick Doblin's talk from the 2004 Burn, and I hope to have most of the rest of them in that format (which is just MP3 but with an RSS syndicator feed . . . for the geek-inclined) before this year's Burning Man lectures.

And I'm also planning on PodCasting some old Terence McKenna talks I taped back in 1998 as well as some tidbits from Jon Hanna's Mind States conferences. . . . And if you download iPodder (there's a link on the page referenced above) you can subscribe to our channel, Psychedelic Salon, and then you'll automatically receive a notice whenever I post a new program.

. . . if you like em, please help us spread the word . . . or, I guess you can spread the word that you don't like them if that's the case :-).

Thank you very much to everyone who recorded, encoded and got these lectures online. 2004 was my first Burn, along with the first time that I could discuss and share experiences with others who are like minded. I will remember these lectures for a very long time. Wonderful stuff!

More MP3s now online

Thanks to the tip from n-lite, I've been able to cut the file sizes in less than half and have posted a few more talks. Now you will find the Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday talks posted in MP3 format. ( http://pn.matrixmasters.com/BM-talks/lectureseriesbyday2004.html )

This morning I received the raw files for the Friday and Saturday talks and will have them posted by the end of next week . . . sooner if I can.

If, after listening to the talks that are posted, someone wants to send me a brief paragraph (or a few headlines) about each talk, I'll post them under the MP3 links so others will have a better idea of whether they'd like to download them or not.

. . . and I thank you all for your patience . . . I'll try to get this years' talks posted right after the burn this year . . . AND, btw, we're joining forces with MAPS this year to bring you another stellar program at Burning Man.

MP3s from 2004

Well, believe it or not, I've finally posted a couple of the 2004 talks. But I'm having a problem with file size. Some of the MP3s I received were recorded at the highest quality possible, which means that a 50 minute talk is over 200MB ... and that's probably larger than anyone wants to download :-).

Even the files I've posted can be reduced without a noticeable loss in quality IF ONLY I could find a freeware or shareware product to convert these files. I've wasted a lot of time downloading and testing various tools, but none so far will help me reduce the file size.

So I'm at a stand-still untl I can find some conversion software ... any ideas???

I just heard that ticket sales for the Chapel of Sacred Mirrors benefit in L.A. haven't been as robust as hoped. So come on L.A., how about a big turn-out for Alex on Saturday, March 5th (6525 Sunset Blvd.). $25 online and $30 at the door.

This event starts at 8:00 p.m. and lasts until 3:00 a.m. !!!! ... There's more information about it on Alex's Web site www.alexgrey.com).

This is going to be a wonderful chance to meet Alex as well as a good way to meet like-minded Tribers.

BTW, Alex and his family participated in the Palenque Norte lectures at Burning Man 2003. You can download an MP3 edition of their talk at www.palenquenorte.org.

OK, it looks like I'm gonna make it this year. Especially if you guys are up for the following -

A slot for 2-3 hours throughout the week devoted to explorations under the umbrella of

FORMS & FLOWS OF THE EMERGENT PLANETARY CULTURE.

Structured dialogues, with guest speakers. Ideal format is to have people offer a "seed-crystal" about 10-20 minutes focused on a specific thesis or subtopic, to stimulate group discussion. Maybe a few longer things for those who have full blown shpiels.

- looking for speakers to talk about

new cosmologies
permaculture/ecovillages
new forms of relationships
world social forum - someone who's actually been there

I'd also love to engineer a debate between the Futurist/Singularitarian school and the Peak Oil/Dieoff school. That would be fun!

By the way, my friend Alessandra is putting together a zine, title "UNIFIED FIELD" and is open to submissions. . . <danda@ucla.edu>

Ciao

Possible theme song for 2004: "God Take Bush"

The theme song from the new Paranoise vs. Bush "Rant" is online in MP3 format. This is a satirical piece where a preacher tells his congregation that Bush has done such a wonderful job that it is now time for his great reward in heaven. At the end of his sermon the entire congregation erupts into the very catchy new hymn "I Wish That God Would Take Bush".

That "hymn" is now online in MP3 format at:

In case you didn't notice the little orange icon with "XML" on it in most tribe's headers, this link provides a "feed" to news readers. Among other things, RSS stands for Real Simple Syndication. Basically that means that posts from this tribe can be picked up by other Web sites and republished. If you want to learn more about RSS, check out

http://searchenginewatch.com/sereport/article.php/2175281

As moderator, I can turn this feature off if the majority of our members would rather keep these discussions private. Personally, I like providing this feed. In the near future I plan on hooking into it on our Palenque Norte main site (www.palenquenorte.org). That way you can see the latest postings while you are listening to the MP3s we will continue to post. (In case you missed it, we now have Terence McKenna's 1999 talk from the original Palenque seminar posted.)

Peace, love, & light,

Alex Grey talk from Burning Man now online

I've just posted the MP3 recordings of Alex, Allyson, and Zena Grey recorded at Burning Man this year. They were among the speakers at the Palenque Norte theme camp and graciously allowed us to post recordings of their talk on the Net. The title of their presentation is "Art Love Family and Psychedelics".

NEW McKenna MP3s from Palenque 1999

I've just posted one of Terence McKenna's talks online in MP3 format. This was one of the last presentations Terence made at the Entheobotany Conference in Palenque, Mexico in January 1999. The MP3s are broken into short three to five minute segments.

SOUND BITES:
"The psychedelic community has given itself the image of an underclass" ... "The news coming out of science is the most psychedelic news there is" ... "I've come to a kind of cyber pantheistic Emersonianism" ... "I suppose I will go to the 'grave with life as mysterious to me as I found it when I came to consciousness" ... "we are creating a creature that lives in a different kind of temporal universe than us" ... "where did the world come from, where is it bound, and who's along for the ride". ... plus much more.

The page is at:
http://www.matrixmasters.com/pn/MiscMP3s/TerenceMcKenna1999.html

Enjoy!

Head's up, your URL on the tribe listing is incorrect

and thanks for the talks last summer. See you again soon.

Palenque Norte is a Burning Man theme camp and extended family. We produce an all-star lecture series in Black Rock City. MP3s of this year's talks can be found on our Web site at http://www.palenquenotre.org. We hope you will join us at next year's burn and in our tribe here online.

Should be palenquenorte.org - si?

Albert/Nutmeg Alfredo - BRCPO (we care how you look)

Just wanted to say I think Palenque Norte is one of the all-time hightlights of Burning Man. I just wish it had gotten more publicity on the playa... kinda got lost in the shuffle as far as most people I'd talked to were concerned. But once I found out about what you guys were doing... wow.
Thanks for adding some gravitas to the hedonism.
